Here we have an example of a looped pile wool carpet which has suffered a spillage from what the customer claimed to be “red boot polish”

There’s a sudden overwhelming urge to put the problem right, i mean who wants to look at that nasty stain?
The customers reaction is very common in this example, she reached for several products which she thought would remedy the situation.
Boot polish is usually an oil based product so it wouldn’t make much sense to try and use a water based cleaner to remove it. Unfortunately the customer used an acetone based solvent which was applied directly to the carpet and then scrubbed with a brush.

Loop pile, wool carpets are very delicate and scrubbing them with any brush or towel will cause the loops to fur and fuzz, this causes irreversible damage plus the applied solvent will only spread the red boot polish!
Modern carpets have a latex backing and this latex will literately melt when a solvent is directly applied, causing the carpet to become weak and limp.
When the acetone product failed to remove the colour left by the polish, the customer then decided to apply vinegar to the entire area which caused the carpet to turn a slight yellow colour.
Now we have a a carpet with a stain that has spread and damaged fibres!
